Brawley Health ACTION

This community-led project responded to residents' concerns by testing soil from homes next to a former agrochemical facility. Oral history interviews with residents revealed a complex community history of resilience.

Tracking California partnered with Comite Civico del Valle and Universidad Popular to conduct the Brawley Health ACTION Environmental Study. This project engaged residents living near PureGro, a former agrochemical facility in Brawley, California, to address longstanding community concerns about potential contamination from the facility by:

  • Documenting community concerns and oral histories
  • Assessing health data
  • Designing and conducting environmental monitoring
  • Reporting results back to the participants, the broader community, and other stakeholders
  • Conducting capacity-building activities to empower the community to protect their own health

All activities were guided by a Community Advisory Group. This project was not affiliated with the Department of Toxic Substance Control's PureGro clean-up effort.
